What is Falcon and What is "Neural Network"?

Bloomfield State Bank’s Debit Security software Falcon, is a “neural network” technology.  During the first

30 – 45 days of scoring on a new debit card, Falcon is “learning” the way each cardholder makes transactions.  This makes decisions on transaction classification difficult.  As time goes on, Falcon learns how you use your debit card.

As a transaction comes in, the Falcon Software would compare things like:

    • Velocity of the transactions; how closely spaced (time-wise) are they?

    • Type of merchant; some merchant categories experience a higher percentage of fraud than others.

    • Valid PIN?

    • Proximity to the home address of the cardholder?

    • The country that processed the transaction (was it international, does MasterCard report a lot of fraud from this country?).

    • Proximity to the last attempted transaction?

    • Do you use ATMs?

    • Do you use receive Cash Back from merchants?

    • Do you normally use your PIN or sign for transactions?

    • Do you shop only in certain areas?  Ex: Usually merchants to and from work?  Just a few merchants?

Falcon then consults the statistical data on the cardholder to evaluate each transaction and then assigns a numeric score.  The scores range from 1 – 999; the higher the score, the more likely that the transaction is fraudulent.
